Dot to Dot

Today I decided that I would create a Dot to Dot using the Doberman because that is what dog i used in the dog grid as a split personality.
I created two which would help me with the explaining split personality in my pieces more. The top dog I created has dots further apart which means when the puzzle is to be done it will have rough lines and not be smooth which would give it a mixed up and confused personality, I then did the bottom one with the lines really close together so that when the Dot to Dot was to be done the lines would be smooth which would give the dog a personality which would be clearer.

Dog Grid

Today I created a grid of the 15 dogs I have chosen to use and put them into a grid of 3*5. I then used a light box to draw around the dogs so that they weren't photography and were the outlines and drawings. I then used the words from my Questionnaire to create 3 grids of different moods and personality dogs. The three grids I used were: Angry, Good and General moods.
Within the grid I made one dog in the middle grey and gave it the opposite mood to what the rest of the grid had so that it had a different and split personality.

I have included the three grids below to explain further.

Dog Research

Today I researched into dogs and what breeds are and look like I chose to use 15 breeds of dog which I think would work well in the grid idea I have chosen.
The 15 dogs I have chosen to use are:

  • Spaniel
  • Dalmatian
  • Retriever
  • Greyhound
  • Pit Bull
  • Chihuahua
  • Rottweiler
  • Akita
  • Maltese
  • Boxer
  • Doberman
  • Poodle
  • Sheltie
  • Beagle
  • Labrador
All of these dogs are different in different ways. Some of the dogs are always nice and some are known to be aggressive but all of the dogs have sides which can be snappy and snap between the two sides.

Noma Bar Research

Creating imagery that is similar to the work of Noma Bar would be a good representation of split personality because they show messy collage while they are still organised and planned out.

Bob Van Dijk Research

The work of Bob Van Dijk interests me because his work shows the side of a personality that is crazy. I think using the ideas of Bob Van Dijk would work well as grounds of a portrait if I used found in my questionnaire.

These are three examples I used to replicate the work of Bob Van Dijk

Rick Valicenti Research

I think that the work of Rick Valicenti is really expressive and would work well with using the moods and expressions of personalities in my work.

I can use the idea in my project work by making the words I have found in my questionnaire into imagery like I have done below. This would work well as type in my project because it looks like what it says.

Creative Collage and 'Messy' Drawings

Today I did some experimental image making to try and make the idea of split personality more graphical and turn it into imagery.

This image contains scans of a face which all have different facial expressions and which have then been worked back into with a continuous line which have been used to make a mixture of emotions and represent a messy mind and personality.

This image was originally using the idea as an opposite for the original smiley face but to make it sad for effect. it looks good because the yellow circle usually is a happy symbol. I have used a clear sheet over the top of the image to turn the image into a split personality by having the happy face on top of the sad face.

I did this image using stick and ink which I think works really well to show emotions. I did it onto masking tape which cant really be seen that well in the image but i think it works well and would look effective doing it as a sad eye because the ink goes watery onto the tape so would make the image look sadder.

Barbra Kruger

I have studied Barbara Kruger because I think that her work would work well with some of my ideas. Most of Krugers work have text on them which instantly changes the view of the text which is one thing I would like to include in my work.

Semiotics

This weekend i worked on the idea of using semiotics.
For this image I used the same image but added different emotions underneath the image to give the image a different meaning and emotion. The image explains that a personality could view the crowd as being a party but their personality could split and flip to viewing the crowd as being claustrophobic and start to panic.

Here I have copied the same image on the photocopier in black and white and they contain the same woman in each but I have coloured the eyes differently to give the images different meanings.  One woman has blue eyes and the other has black eyes. The woman with blue eyes looks open and happy where the woman with black eyes looks deep and distressed.
Here i photocopied an image and made it black and white and simply added a red highlight to each image but in a different place. For one image I have added red lips to look as though the person was dressed up and has makeup on but on the other image I have added red lines onto the face to give it the impression of being hurt and scared.

Food Animations

I used the fruit idea with these two pieces to try and get the idea of Split Personalities across using facial expressions

For this idea I used a marker pen onto oranges to draw facial expressions onto them. I think these work well because I used the green core of the orange as a nose. I think that each expression works well because it is obvious what the expression is supposed to express.

For this idea I used Photoshop to add expressions onto toaster machines so that they looked as though they were alive. I used the front toaster to be the 'Split Personality' toaster and the back toasters to be on looking in shock. I think that this idea works well as a Split Personality piece because it shows the toaster split into two.

Steven Guarnaccia
I chose to do the idea of oranges based on the idea that Steven Guarnaccia used with these images. I think it gives a humorous side to the pieces.

Layered Images

Today I used original images and drew into them to create a different side and a split personality.

I decided that to use an image of a child would show a different side of the project. This image could be scanned in and layered up with text and other emotions to give it more depth.
The image of the girl has a big difference in the original and the traced image which adds a great effect to the split personality because it shows an instant difference.

Using the drawing of the cat and ladybird is useful because adding an emotion to these from a person works well. Each different person that sees this image will view them in a different way which means that the personality differences of the viewer shows how they are all different which is what my Statement of Intent says.

For the cat and ladybird I used continuous line drawings which I think are strong images and work well graphically.

Sewing Workshop

This week we did a workshop on Sewing images together.
This is the best of the workshop because it shows the bonding and joining of the two personalities joining threw sewing. the text on the image helps to describe the mixture of the two and also makes the image more graphical.

I think that this image works well onto the grey background because i have used zig zag for the hair.

This image looks better on the wrong side because it is clearer to see the cotton where the image on the original looks too dark.

I did this idea by putting to images on top of each other so that they can create a multiple image. I used the face for the one on the right to sew a face over the flowers on the left. I then sewed zigzag over the hair to create a mask on the right.

This was a collage of the photocopies i did of the images. I think that the sewing effect is good because they look like precision lines where they are quite opposite.

Keith Lemon/Leigh Francis

Today I did research into the celebrity Leigh Francis who has a split personality as Keith Lemon. I think this could be more of an alter ego than a split personality but I decided to research into him because he is a well known person as Keith Lemon but not many people know him as Leigh Francis. One other reason it interests me is that Leigh Francis is a married man with a daughter but not many people know that which I think is an amazing thing that a man can keep his private life covered up and secretive.
Looking into Leigh Francis has helped me realise that a person doesn't have to look different to have a split personality. sometimes it is them acting differently and people not recognising this. This means that if I used photography in my work then I will have to use some typography to explain further the idea of split personality.

Photoshop Together

For this idea i had two view points of the same face and merged them together on Photoshop. I think that this has worked really well and would be good to arrange the image more and add more to it. I think the idea shows the 'Split Personality' theme really well because it looks like the same person trying to get out of themselves.

Star Signs

Today I researched into star signs and how they can be used to help and change views on personalities. I decided that star signs would work well in a piece because they are visual and simple to replicate. I mainly looked into rising stars and how two star signs link together. I used the two symbols from shared signs to create new signs.

I think that this is a good way to create new symbols that have two meanings and a split personality. This links in with my original idea of split personality.
