Magazine Review

Moderno Scout

This magazine article is written by www.fontbureau.com and is about Typography.

The main reason I originally chose this article to write about was because the layout interested me. It is a very graphical article because it used different fonts and sizes in it, but they are used for a reason, each font changes when the article changes font it is talking about which I thought was a really cleaver idea to use.

I think that this article is aimed at people who are interested in typography and how it looks because of the layout, that is what is seen first then the text is read afterwards. I think if it was aimed at people other than someone interested in typography then they could think that the piece is not laid out very cleverly because they could struggle to read it.

The piece explains how David Berlow changed his typeface and designs all depending on who wanted and needed them, he didn't just change them because that's how he wanted them, each typeface he designed was designed for a reason and then used and lasted. He had designed typefaces for a variety of places and people which is why all of the type is different and not similar.

it says that his main designs were for newspapers which could be why the article is laid out like a news paper with a large title at the top and columns. I've added a picture to the bottom so the layout can be seen because I think it is very different to an ordinary article in a magazine and catches the eye.

Pictures from a book

Today I took a book from the library which was called 'Colors SIGNS' and these two pictures were in the book. I'm not sure which country they were from but I found them to be really interesting because of how open they are. Usually a toilet sign is a picture of a man or woman but these are 'action' pictures. :)

Photography- Around College

Dome

I took this picture trying to be creative because it is a picture of a picture and I think that the idea of taking pictures of pictures can be creative.

With this picture I thought that the equipment looked really interesting and expensive. Its important for the Performing Arts Students and I thought it would make a good picture.

West Block

This picture interested me because of how random rubbish is, I think that it can be a form of art in how random it is.

This picture is also of rubbish. I think that the skip adds a randomness to the photograph.

North Block 2

I took this picture because Ii like the sign, it says exactly what it is supposed to and is clear to see.

I took this picture from above because I like how it shows a different perspective of the stairs.

Learner Services

This picture was taken without him knowing. The reason I like it is because the way he dresses is 'fashionable' but in my opinion I think it looks a mess. :)

I took this picture because I liked how all of the leaflets look the same and are unified.

Main Reception

I liked this picture because the sign says keep clear and as I was taking it the doors opened so the door is going through the sign.

With this picture I liked the naturalness of how everyone is walking about with no awareness of the picture being taken.

Library

This picture was taken in the Library. I like how natural it looks because it is someone sat reading a book with books all around.

I like this picture because all of the books are the same and I like the perspective of it.

Photography Research

Sometimes You Just Know
By Justin Visnesky

Most of his work comes from exploring with his past present and future. This series of photographs are familiar spaces and surroundings to him, all of the photographs are a visual document of his feelings at the time.

He says 'I'm not interested in freezing time, but freezing a feeling, that feeling you get in your gut when you know something is right and may never be again'

I like this photograph because of the simpleness of is symbolising the end of a party and I think that the feeling he has 'frozen' with this picture is that it was a good night that will never happen again.

This picture is showing the feeling of being comfy and not wanting the feeling to end. that's why I think he has 'frozen' this picture.

I like this picture because of how much colour is used. I  think that the feeling being 'frozen' in this picture is tidiness and how the flowers and fruit will soon loose their colour and never gain them back again.

This picture is also taken at the end of a party because the balloons are popped. I think the difference between parties are that this was a child's party, so he has 'frozen' this picture because he will never see the child be young again.

I think this picture has been frozen because the feeling when being woken up in a morning is wanted to be 'frozen' by most people because they usually want more sleep. I think that he has captured the feeling of sleep in this picture really well.

Photography- Visit to Town

Last week we went into Chesterfield Town to capture its culture. One of the main things I found was that it was most peoples dinner hour so most of the people I saw were either resting or shopping in their uniforms. I chose the order of pictures by how busy I thought the people in them were in terms of them being on a 'restful' dinner hour (Busiest First).
The pictures that I chose all interest me in a different way. For example I like the first picture the best because it is two pictures in one, the main point of the picture is the butchers cutting meat but if you look closely there is a reflection in the window which shows the world going by.
The second picture particularly interests me because we caught some men searching through the bin which I found really humorous because they didn't look to me like they were the people that would search through a bin.
One other reason I chose these pictures is that each person in them could have a different speech bubble above their head which could all be turned into a different picture depending on what the words were.

Photography- What they would be saying

These are a few of the pictures that I have added text to with what I think they would be saying or thinking...

Photoshop Experiments

This was the first time I have used photoshop before. It took some time to get used to using all of the tools and ways of using it, but I did 4 pictures that I think look good. Out of them all I like the first and last pictures. I like the first picture because of how random it is and the last one because of the vibrant colours.

Fine Art- T-shirts

Fine Art- Objects

This section of fine art really opened my eyes to the specialist area. Before I didn't really know what the area included. I enjoyed the first day of the taster because it was fun to be creative with the props and t-shirts.

When we had the props we had to go to an area in the college and explore with them taking pictures, we did this by using the concept of contact. The first picture shows a balance on the flat body which involved keeping still and holding the knees and feet together

The second and third picture are using pressure to keep them in place, I used a part of my body and lent on them so that the contact between me, the prop and the wall wasn't broken.

Alan Feltcher

The main inspiration I have is Alan Fletcher because I think his work is brilliant even though some pieces are really simple. My favourite pieces are the ones that use words because they usually have a play on words and have more than one meaning which is what makes me really interested in looking at them. I like the fact that his work isn’t just what it is and it can be seen differently by different people.

Marcel Duchamp used the phrase to remind us that 'It takes time to judge the worth of work'.

Typography- Times Roman

Times New Roman is a serif typeface commissioned by the British newspaper The Times in 1931, created by Victor Lardent at the English branch of Monotype.  It was commissioned after Stanley Morison had written an article criticizing The Times for being badly printed and typographically antiquated. The font was supervised by Morison and drawn by Victor Lardent, an artist from the advertising department of The Times. Morison used an older font named Plantin as the basis for his design, but made revisions for legibility and economy of space.
